Fat Truck® — the ultimate industrial off-road vehicle.

Martin Antoniak • Mar 01, 2022

Why Buy a Fat Truck®?

Zeal Motor Inc. designed the Fat Truck®  in 2018 for X-Treme industrial off-road transportation needs.

In typical off-road applications, there is a limit to where pick-ups or XTVs can go.

While pick-ups have a great carrying capacity, they aren't ideal for hard-to-reach job sites characterized by swamps, mud, snow, and rough rocky terrain. You might consider an XTV to get you to your remote job site but they have limitations as well.

First, XTVs do not have the kind of carrying capacity to transport people and goods needed in many of the utility, mining, and exploration industries. In addition, XTVs would get stuck in many situations. If you need a reliable vehicle to get where you need to go, consider the Fat Truck®.

The Fat Truck® is not an XTV—it's an industrial off-road utility vehicle. It is designed to transfer heavy loads and personnel to remote sites in a safe manner.

In addition, its power, carrying capacity, and amphibious features allow you to transport heavy loads to previously unreachable areas via land transportation. Before the Fat Truck®, helicopters were often the only solution.

The Fat Truck® will save you thousands of dollars over hiring a helicopter to bring in heavy loads to a remote site.

While there were other X-treme industrial off-road vehicles in the market before 2018, i.e., the Russian-designed Sherp, the Fat Truck® works better—Fat Truck®'s engineers designed it to be better.

The Fat Truck®  stands out in many aspects, from a better driving experience to improved safety, comfort, and overall refinement.

Who is the Fat Truck® for?

The Fat Truck® has been made for various industries, i.e., telecommunications, pipeline, power line, wind farms, first responders, search and rescue, and other industries that operate in hard-to-reach locations that aren't accessible using regular vehicles.

Fat Trucks® will reach where pick-ups won't. They can float on water, tackle the harshest snow, rocks, and other X-Treme rough terrain environments. What's more, they can climb/descend steep hills (70% inclines), making them perfect for companies with operations in hilly/steep job sites.

Main Features of the Fat Truck®

There are two Fat Truck® models currently in the market, namely 2.8 C and 2.8 P. Let's explore the main features to see why the Fat Truck® stands out from other X-treme industrial off-road vehicles available today.

In February 2023, Fat Truck® announced a new industrial utility vehicle called the Fat Truck® 8x8. It comes in two variations, a hauler and a wagon and is designed for even heavier payloads. Learn more about Fat Truck 8x8s.

This article covers the Fat Truck 2.8 C Wagon to transport people or personnel and 2.8 P Pickup for goods.

Superior Engine

How powerful are the Fat Truck® 2.8 C Wagon and the Fat Truck® 2.8 P Pickup?

The Fat Truck® has a C2.2 Caterpillar Turbo Diesel engine with an output of 67 hp and 208 nm torque. Besides being powerful, the engine meets Tier 4 Final emission standards, the latest US EPA standard. The Caterpillar C2.2 engine is also renowned for reliability. The engine placement also stands out. The Fat Truck® engine is located at the centre of the vehicle to offer unmatched balance. The central location also saves on space.

Dimensions and Weight

How big is the Fat Truck®?

The Fat Truck® Model 2.8 C measures 146.5 inches by 100 inches by 101- inches in length, width, & height, respectively, while the Fat Truck® Model 2.8 P measures 146.5 inches by 100 inches by 103 inches in length, width, and height, respectively. Both models have the same ground clearance at 20.7 inches. However, the 2.8 P is slightly taller than the 2.8 C.

Model Length Width Height Ground Clearance Weight
Fat Truck® Model 2.8 C 146.5- inches 100- inches 101- inches 20.7 -inches 5400 pounds (2443 kg)
Fat Truck® Model 2.8 P 146.5- inches 100- inches 103-inches 20.7 -inches 4,900 pounds or (2,222 kgs)

Dimensions and clearance aside, the Fat Truck® Model 2.8 C weighs 5,400 lbs or (2443 kgs) while the Model 2.8 P weighs 4,900 lbs or (2,222 kgs). The Fat Truck® 2.8 P is lighter though both trucks fall within the towable limits which means you do not need a permit to tow a Fat Truck®.

Martin explains the towing using a half ton pick up truck.

Superior Transmission (Hydrostatic Transmission)

The Fat Truck® has been designed with a hydrostatic transmission that offers fully independent left and right wheel control. Each side of the truck can be controlled independently, aided by two pumps and motors connected to the truck's propeller system using carbon belts.

The two transmissions, one for either side given the Fat Truck® unique capabilities ranging from infinitely varying speed control to self-overload protection, dynamic braking, reverse rotation capabilities, and a higher power-to-weight ratio.

Superior Tires

The Fat Truck® tires also stand out for their size (measure 1.5 metres in height, 60 centimetres in width) and pressure control features. Besides being low-pressure wheels (1 to 5 psi) that make them perfect for X-Treme terrain, the tires are designed to assume the shape of the object they are going over instead of climbing the obstacle.

What's more, the tires have pre-set automatic pressure control that makes it possible to inflate or deflate the tires automatically, depending on the terrain. Most importantly, this can be done from inside the cabin, and tires inflate/deflate quickly (0 to 5 psi in a record 17 seconds). This is attributable to the onboard air compressor that takes less than a minute to inflate all tires accordingly.

Capacity (Passenger, Payload, & Fuel)

How many people can a Fat Truck® carry?

The Fat Truck 2.8 C and 2.8 P both have a 2200 lbs or (1000 kg) payload. The 2.8 C can carry up to 8 (6 people in the rear, 2 in the front), the 2.8 P, which is the pick-up version of the Fat Truck®, can carry 8 people as well.

The pick-up version is geared towards items that are carrying items that are bulky and or should be separate from personnel (fuel).

Model Payload Passenger Capacity
Fat Truck® 2.8 C 2200 lbs or (1000 kg) Up to 8 people. Two people in the front and six people in the rear.
Fat Truck® 2.8 P 2200 lbs or (1000 kg) Up to 8 people. Two people in the cab and additional six seats can be added the the pick-up.

The passenger and payload capacity is impressive for an Xtreme industrial off-road vehicle that can go anywhere on land, snow, or water.

The 2.8 C has an 18.5-gallon tank (70-litre tank) adequate enough for over 10 hours of non-stop operation. The 2.8 P has a 21-gallon (80-litre tank) adequate for over 12 hours of non-stop operation.

Both models consume approximately 4.1 to 5.6 litres every hour.

Model Tank size Operational time
Fat Truck® 2.8 C 18.5-gallon tank (70 litre) Up to 10 hours of non-stop operation for the 2.8 C.
Fat Truck® 2.8 P 21-gallon tank (80 litre) Up to 12 hours of non-stop operation for the 2.8 P.

Impressive Speed

How Fast is the Fat Truck®?

Both Fat Truck® models can travel at 40 km/h (25 mph) on land and 5 km/h (3.1 mph) on water which is more than enough speed in Xtreme terrain/conditions.

Model Speed on land Speed on water
Fat Truck® 2.8 C and 2.8 P 40 km/h (25 mph) 5 km/h (3.1 mph)

Impressive Maximum Uphill, Downhill & Turning Radius

The maximum uphill and downhill angle is 35°/70%, while the maximum sidehill is 22°/40%. The Fat Truck® can turn on the spot.

Incredibly Safe Industrial Vehicle

The Fat Truck® is incredibly safe.

First and foremost, all passengers have 3-point safety belts.

The truck also has an ISO-certified rollover protection structure (ISO 3471 ROPS) that ensures safety on the go and in the most extreme job sites.

Other notable safety features include a glass hammer for breaking the cabin's tempered glass windows in the event of an emergency. The truck also has an automatic safety brake and is designed to keep engine fumes and heat away from the occupants.

The Fat Truck® also has a maximum speed limiter to prevent over-speeding, an automatic brake that keeps the vehicle stationary, grab handles for safe entry/exit, a stretcher fit, and more! There's no safer vehicle in the Fat Truck®'s class currently in the market.

Usability Features

The Fat Truck® has a large side-opening door that the driver and front passenger can use. Rear passengers can access the truck through a rear door and sit in side-mounted seats. The truck also features a compact steel ladder stowable neatly between the two front seats.

Superior Frame

The Fat Truck® is built using Hardox® steel (abrasion-resistant steel)  that is unmatched in durability. The top of the truck is made using aluminum for its superior strength and lightweight nature.

Easy Maintenance

The Fat Truck® was designed to be water-tight. It also lacks greasing points and requires an oil change after 500 hours. What's more, engine maintenance can be done easily through a cowling (a removable covering) located in the cab that offers full engine access.

Options Variety

You can outfit the Fat Truck® to meet your needs. For instance, the truck can come without seats if you wish to carry specified cargo, such as a generator in the back. The pick-up version of the Fat Truck® (the 2.8 P) truck can carry anything a pick-up truck would carry and more.

The cab has many options so you can design it to meet your requirements.

Notable cab options include custom colour, brush guard/additional brush guards, air conditioning, roof rack (with rear ladder), remote-controlled directional lights, exterior mirrors, front & rear light bars, Bluetooth radio, backup camera & alarm, roof hatch, inclinometer and LED beacon light.

Options include vehicle remote control, a trailer, hitch, additional battery, winch, and side LED light.

Other Notable Features/Pros

There are other reasons why the Fat Truck® stands out. For instance, the Fat Truck® is the only high-end X-Treme industrial off-road transportation vehicle that has been designed for the North American Market.

The Fat Truck® also comes with a 1000-hour or 1-year warranty which is impressive for a vehicle meant for extreme terrain applications. The Fat Truck®’s control console and steering joystick control is also impressive. Operators have an electronic screen that they use to select the preferred driving mode i.e., trail, mud, water, or snow.
