Argo XTV Aurora Series Review: Who is the Argo Aurora Series XTV for?

A picture of argo aurora 950 model.

When it comes to top XTVs in Canada and the world at large, Argo XTVs top the list. However, Argo has many XTVs on offer. The Aurora Series is part of five types of XTV in the recreational vehicle series. The other XTVs include; Xplorer Series, Frontier Series, Magnum Series, and Conquest Series.

To understand why you should buy an XTV from the Argo Aurora Series as opposed to the other recreational Argo XTVs, Argo designed Aurora XTVs as premium recreational 8x8 (8-wheeler) XTVs. If you desire ultimate high performance, superior technology, and must-have XTV features, the Argo Aurora Series is for you.

Main Features of Argo Aurora Series XTVs

Argo's Aurora Series has ten XTVs, namely; the Aurora 800 SX, Aurora 800 SX HUNTMASTER, Aurora 850 SX, Aurora 850 SX HUNTMASTER, Aurora 950 SX, Aurora 950 SX HUNTMASTER, Aurora 950 BIGFOOT MX8, Aurora 800 SX-R, Aurora 850 SX-R and AURORA 950 SX-R.

These ten different Aurora Series XTVs have similarities and differences. Let’s begin with the similarities.

Similarities Between the Argo Aurora Series XTVs

1. Engine: While some Aurora Series XTVs produce more horsepower than others and may differ in engine cooling systems (fan-cooled and liquid-cooled), all the XTVs feature V-twin EFI engines which are highly fuel-efficient.

2. Clutch (ITC): All Argo XTVs in the Aurora Series have Argo’s newest Instant Torque Clutch (ITC) that makes the XTVs shift seamlessly and make maximum use of engine power and torque.

3. Admiral Transmission: The transmission is also the same. Admiral transmission is a complex gearing system with dual differentials on output shafts. When coupled with an ITC clutch, the transmission increases torque and acceleration faster than previous Argo XTV transmission models.

4. APS (Argo Progressive Steering): Argo Aurora Series ATVs also have APS, which features a spring element between the braking system and handlebars. APS allows effortless, responsive steering over a wide range with unmatched smooth turns that are not only fun but comfortable.

5. Temperature Control: The XTVs also have less temperature coming from under the hood to boost rider and passenger comfort. Argo Aurora Series XTVs have heat-reflective & heat-absorbing materials that cover all potential heat sources from the hood to the exhaust.

6. Rims: All XTVs come with the Signature Argo AirLock rims that offer unmatched firmness in all-terrain without compromising smoothness. The rims are also made of strong metal (steel or aluminum) to withstand unmatched force.

7. Other Similarities: Argo's Aurora Series XTVs also have other similarities in steering brakes (hydraulic), fuel capacity (all have 32-litre fuel tanks) except the Aurora 950 BIGFOOT MX8, which has a 33-litre tank. The ground clearance is also the same at 10-inches for tires and 11 –inches for tracks. All Argo Aurora Series XTVs also have the same width and height at (60 and 51 inches, respectively) The XTVs, however, differ in length.

Differences Between Argo Aurora Series XTVs: Similarities aside, let’s explore the differences. If you want to identify the best Argo Aurora Series XTV for you, the XTVs are different in several aspects discussed below.

Generally, all Aurora Series XTVs will produce about the same power in typical applications.

2. Load Capacity Differences

How much of a load can I carry with an Argo Aurora Series XTV?

Maybe you want an Argo Aurora Series XTV for applications that require you to carry around things. If that’s the case, the XTVs with the highest load capacity is the Aurora 800 SX and Aurora 850 SX with a capacity of 499 kgs on land, 409kgs on water.

The 950 SX HUNTMASTER is also handy in regards to load capacity, with a 481 kg load capacity on land and 390 on water. The Aurora XTV with the least carrying capacity is the Aurora 950 SX-R, which can carry a maximum of 249 kgs on water and 386 kgs on land.

3. Seating Capacity Differences

Which Argo Aurora Series XTV can carry the most people?

Carrying capacity is another critical consideration when buying an XTV.  For maximum seating capacity offered by Argo Aurora Series, (6-people on land, 4-people on water), consider the Aurora 800 SX, 800 SX HUNTMASTER, 850 SX, 850 SX HUNTMASTER, 950 SX, and 950 SX HUNTMASTER. All the other Argo XTVs in the Aurora Series have a lower “on-land” capacity of 4 people only).

4. Speed Differences

How fast can an Argo Aurora Series XTV go?

Speed is an important consideration, especially when you are looking to buy an Argo XTV for applications like hunting or exploration over long distances.

While all Argo Aurora XTVs have a similar speed on the water, the fastest XTVs can reach 40 km/h on land. There are seven fast Argo Aurora Series XTVs capable of reaching 40 km/h on land. They include; the Argo Aurora 850 SX, 850 SX HUNTMASTER, 950 SX, 950 SX HUNTMASTER, 950 BIGFOOT MX8, 850 SX-R, and 950 SX-R.

The other three are the slowest Aurora Series XTVs, with a maximum speed of 26 km/h.

5. Weight Differences

For XTV owners interested in carrying cargo, towing, or other applications requiring weight considerations, the heaviest Argo Aurora XTV is the 950 SX-R at 771 kgs. The 850 SX-R and 800 SX-R are also heavy at 762 kgs. The lightest Argo Aurora Series XTVs are the 800 SX and 850 SX at 657 kgs.

6. Dimensions

How big is an Argo Aurora Series XTV?

All Argo Aurora Series XTVs have the same width and height at 60-inches and 51-inches, respectively. However, there are differences in length. Dimension differences are important because they translate to factors like more space. They also dictate other factors like portability or towing.

The longest Argo Aurora XTV is 126 inches. They include; the Aurora 800 SX HUNTMASTER, 850 SX HUNTMASTER, 950 SX HUNTMASTER, and 950 BIGFOOT MX8. The other Aurora Series XTVs are 119 inches long.

7. Colour Differences

Colour is also an important consideration when buying an Argo Aurora Series XTV. For instance, an XTV acquired for hunting purposes should have camo.

Argo Aurora XTVs come in three main colour options, namely black, camo or a three-colour option package (green, black, and orange).

For camo, consider all Argo Aurora HUNTMASTER Series XTVs. The 950 BIGFOOT MX8 comes in black, while the other XTVs (800 SX, 850 SX, 950 SX, 800 SX-R, 850 SX-R, and 950 SX-R) come in a green, black, or orange colour.

8. Other Differences (Winch & Brush Guard, Roll-Over Protection)

A winch & brush guard is handy in off-road XTV applications involving pulling and passage over vegetation, tree stumps, etc. Roll-over protection protects occupants from injury in case the XTV rolls over.

Which Argo Aurora Series XTVs have a winch & Brushguard?

Out of the ten Aurora Series XTVs, only four have a winch & brush guard. They include the 800 SX HUNTMASTER, 850 SX HUNTMASTER, 950 SX HUNTMASTER and 950 BIGFOOT MX8.
