MTN Trail Drags

Loch Lomond Equipment Sales is a factory-authorized dealer in Canada for MTN Trail Groomers (also known as Drags).

What are MTN Trail Drags for? How Do MTN Trail Drags Work?

MTN Trail Drags are famous for winter ice road and snowmobile trail grooming applications. The drags smoothen and keep winter ice roads and snowmobile trails flat by "shaving off" high spots and filling in low spots. The result is a smoother, flat, and hard-packed/compact surface.

MTN Trail Drag — an explanation.

MTN Trail Drags have a compaction and vibration advantage. Since they feature wheels and are dragged on snow, they produce a vibration that freezes ice roads and trails faster than normal.

Trail drags are highly recommended in Canada for keeping trails and winter ice roads flat. They have been in use successfully for years by many northern communities in place of tires. Their cutting blades chop off bumps and drags carry the snow to fill in lows. The big pan (located at the rear) compacts the trail.

Top Features of an MTN Trail Drag

Why Should You Buy an MTN Trail Drag as opposed to other drags or using a tire?

An example of an older, less effective method of smoothing some bumps is to drag an old tire behind a snow groomer.

MTN drags come with many features that set them apart from other drags. The most notable features include;

1. Superior Independent Tripping Blades

The MTN trail drag comes with six fully independent blades that trip when they come across obstacles and get back into position. This retracting blade feature offers up to 9-inches of clearance and prevents the entire drag from bouncing off or shuttering components when it hits stationary objects like rocks or protruding tree stumps that are common in low snow and rough terrain.

The MTN Trail Drag has 6 individual tripping blades.

This safeguard also protects blades from unnecessary damage and results in smoother trails by reducing the drag from bouncing when there are obstacles.

Besides tripping, the blades have been designed with slightly different profiles. Every row has blades with a different profile which directs the snow to the middle of the drag as they shave off the tops.

In the front ¼ of the trail drag, there are strobe and work lights attached and raised about 1 metre higher than the base of the drag.

2. Full-Length Side Rails & Extra-Heavy Main Frame.

The MTN drag also has raised side rails running the entire length to carry more snow and ensure most (if not all) lows in the trails or winter ice roads are filled adequately. The design ensures snow collects in the centre area (known as the pan). The collected snow is then deposited into hollows and dips in the trail as the drag moves over the top. This process is what evens the trail.

When an operator drags other items, such as an old tire, the tire moves over the hole in the trail but doesn't have any snow to deposit. Therefore, dragging tires won't fill in holes in a trail resulting in a bumpy ride for people using the trail or ice road.

The rails also make the drag stronger and more rigid. The unusually heavy main frame made of tubular steel also adds unmatched strength and puts this drag ahead of most drags in the market today. The combination of the tripping blades which lift effortlessly over hard, immovable objects plus the solidly built frame provides you with a trail drag that will last years and years.

3. Superior Wheels (Centre or Rear-Mounted)

Depending on your preferences, the MTN Trail Drag can come with centre-mounted wheels that come with notable benefits, such as offering a shorter turning radius. It's also easier to maneuver tight spaces when backing up over deeper snow banks or off trails. Centre-mounted wheels also have some cons.

The rear-mounted wheels (which are also available) offer better clearance when loading and offloading the drag for transportation.

4. Hydraulic Drag Adjustment

The drag also has automatic adjustment features that allow operators to set how much digging is done. This feature offers more custom ice road construction and trail grooming freedom. Hydraulic controls allow the operator to make all adjustments from within the warmth of the groomer cab using a joystick.

5. Custom MTN Trail Drag Features

Loch Lomond Equipment Sales can also offer custom MTN drag features. For instance, the drag can come with high-quality brush cutters mounted to cut low-hanging branches.

Pros and cons of where you mount the brush cutter on the MTN Trail Drag.

We offer two hydraulic brush bar sizes (the 7'4" and 8'6" at an extra cost) that can be pre-installed (welded in place) or provided as an add-on feature. You can also select a manual or hydraulic brush cutter. The brush cutter can be adjusted to lean in or out. Installation position can be done as per the customer’s preferences (backend or rear) as demonstrated in the video below.

The MTN Trail Drag can also come with supports for signage and mounts for toolboxes.

6. Superior Lighting

The drag also comes with warning lights, rear-facing LED strobe, and work lights that are bright enough for snowmobile track and winter road grooming applications at night.

Lighting and safety reflectors are attached to the rear of the trail drag.

7. Superior Steering (4-Adjustable Skegs)

Skegs help the drag track straight, to keep it travelling in a straight line. This feature makes the MTN Trail drag a high-performance drag that won’t dart aimlessly in the snow.

8. Size Variety

You can also buy an MTN trail drag with varied width (4 to 12 feet) and varied length (8 to 20 feet) long. The small-sized MTN drags can be pulled with ease by an Argo or snowmobile, while Prinoth trail groomers can pull the large ones.

9. Other Notable Features

MTN Trail Drags have many other notable features that other manufacturers commonly overlook. For instance, they have a grease fitting on every movable component allowing smooth quiet, and frictionless running at all times.

The pan has also been designed high up to allow easier backing up. Other notable features include reflective striping, which makes the drag visible in dark or low light conditions. Cutting edges also feature double springs for easier adjustments. The drag also has a double cylinder that makes it easy to lift the wheels. MTN Trail drags are extremely operator-friendly and stand out as the highest-quality drags in the industry.

10. Other Reasons to Buy the MTN Trail Drag

Highly Endorsed: The current president of the NWOSTA (North Western Ontario Snowmobile Trail Association) swears by the MTN drag. The endorsement speaks volumes about the kind of trail drag MTN makes and its suitability in Ontario and Manitoba.
